What is Legends of the Superheroes?
It is one of the all-time classics of bad television. Two episodes were created in 1979 and shown on NBC. For years it has been hidden away in the vaults.
This short-lived series depicts several of the well know characters that were active back in the 60′s and 70′s. Included are:
- Batman (the Adam West version)
- Robin (the Burt Ward version)
- The Riddler (Frank Gorshin)
- Captain Marvel
- Green Lantern
- The Flash
- Ghetto Man
- Giganta (one of our favorites!)
The narrator is Gary Owens (remember Laugh-In?) and of course Ed McMahan as the host of the roast.
Is it worth seeing? Only if you liked the 1960′s Batman TV series.
If you are a fan of the more recent Batman movies, this may be more than you can take.
The first episode is the called “The Challenge”. In this hour-long episode, the cast reunites in the Batcave to celebrate Scarlet Cyclone’s birthday. The Legion of Doom shows up to disrupt the party. They are sent on a bomb-diffusing escapade. You can guess the outcome.
The second episode is also an hour long, being a “Roast” format for Batman. Of course the host is Ed McMahon. Each of the characters gets a chance to play to their audience. At times this could be painful; but if you think of the times it is pretty amazing that they were able to pull this off.
But we think that is worth watching. If only to remind you how far things have come.
Or maybe it should be kept buried in the Batcave for good.
